Welcome to Fiesta for Conservation at Lion Country Safari!

What is Fiesta for Conservation at Lion Country Safari

Fiesta for Conservation at Lion Country Safari is a fundraising party organized by a small group of concerned citizens to help conserve biodiversity and cultural diversity in the most biodiverse and threatened regions of tropical Latin America.  We are raising funds for two smaller yet highly effective nonprofit organizations: the Amazon Conservation Team (https://www.amazonteam.org/) and the Tapir Specialist Group (https://tapirs.org/ )

Lion Country Safari https://www.lioncountrysafari.com/ in West Palm Beach, Florida is graciously providing us use of their beautiful, newly remodeled restaurant and the help by their conservation and hospitality professionals to conduct our inaugural Fiesta for Conservation at Lion Country Safari.  The Lion Country Safari chapter of the  AAZK  (zoo keepers)  is our primary partner.

  • Latino food, drinks, music and dancing and guaranteed FUN!
  • Keynote talk by Conservation Hero: Dr. Mark Plotkin
  • Exciting silent auction and raffle to benefit conservation
  • Lion Country Safari Pavilion, 2003 Lion Country Safari Rd, Loxahatchee, FL

Why is the work of Amazon Conservation Team so important?

What does ACT do?

ACT works with many different partner communities through much of Latin America, on diverse projects to protect tropical rainforests, support cultural revitalization, and expand indigenous self-determination. Together they co-create methods that center each community’s unique priorities, challenges, and worldview. This dynamic approach produces holistic impacts that often resist distillation into quantitative metrics. However, the following figures quantify a sampling of ACT’s multi-dimensional impact.

  • 27 Years in existence
  • 2.6 million acres of Indigenous reserve expansions and creations
  • 9.9 million acres under improved sustainable management
  • 11 community ranger and park guard posts constructed
  • 76 million acres mapped of partners' territories & protected areas

Where does ACT work?

Currently, ACT has been active in:

  • Colombia
  • Suriname
  • Brazil
  • Peru
  • Guyana
  • Costa Rica

Who started ACT?

ACT was founded by the renowned American ethnobotanist, Dr. Mark Plotkin and his wife Liliana Madrigal, a conservationist originally from Costa Rica.

Here are TedTalks highlighting some of their work:

Why is Tapir conservation so important?

What is a Tapir?

Tapirs are large, aquatic, rainforest mammals, found in Central and South America and in SE Asia and related to Horses (Equids) and Rhinos. There are 4 species:

  • Central American (Bairds) Tapir, (Endangered with Extinction)
  • Lowland (Brazilian) Tapir, (Vulnerable to Extinction)
  • Andean (Mountain) Tapir, (Critically Endangered)
  • Asian (Malayan) Tapir, (Endangered with Extinction)

Why are Tapirs so important to us?

  • They are the largest wild land mammals of Latin America
  • They are found in and represent extremely biodiverse and threatened rainforest ecosystems
  • They are considered vitally important keystone species because they eat fruit and then disburse seeds throughout the rainforest in their manure. In Brazil they are called the "gardeners of the rainforest". They are also important food sources for large cats, such as jaguars.
  • They are  very beautiful, intelligent, and interesting animals that deserve our protection for future generations to enjoy!
  • They are related to our domestic horses and to rhinos

Why are we supporting the Tapir Specialist Group?

The Tapir Specialist Group is a unit of the IUCN Species Survival Commission, responsible for tapir conservation, worldwide.  The IUCN/SSC Tapir Specialist Group (TSG) is a scientific organization founded in 1980 as one of the 120 Specialist Groups of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Survival Commission (SSC).  TSG has over 140 members, including field researchers, educators, veterinarians, governmental agencies and NGO representatives, zoo personnel, university professors and students, from 28 countries worldwide.
